Legacies Health Centre, Surrey BC: What to expect with Massage Therapy (RMT)
During your first appointment, you will complete a medical history and be fully assessed regarding the reason for a visit to an RMT. Surrey Legacies Health Centre considers this an essential step in creating a baseline to measure results against and determining the best approach to take in resolving your problem.
For the massage therapy treatment, the Massage Therapist (RMT) will instruct you on how to position yourself on the treatment table. Often, a patient will be asked to partially disrobe (during which time the masseuse leaves the room) in order to use an oil or lotion for a specific technique. However, this is always your choice and disrobing is not mandatory for massage therapy. Using knowledge of anatomy and clinical science, the massage therapist will perform a variety of manual techniques, often applying different degrees of pressure with their hands to gain therapeutic results.
After the treatment has been performed, the RMT will reassess the area of concern. This is where you will see measurable results from the massage therapy visit. Based on all of this information, the Massage Therapist will outline an individualized and specific treatment plan to get you better as soon as possible. The degree of injury and your overall health will determine how often you need to come and for how long. Your visit will include recommended exercises to complete at home, which will accelerate your recovery. As part of a team, your massage therapist may also advise that you see a kinesiologist, chiropractor, cold laser therapist, acupuncture, or naturopath if beneficial for your care.
As visits progress, there will be continual assessment. Good communications with your RMT will help you make informed decisions about your therapy, and evaluate a steady progress towards recovery. The massage therapists at Legacies Health Centre will always send a progress report back to any referring physician to also ensure good communication of your massage therapy plan unless directed otherwise.
